How does Vicks VapoRub work?
Vicks VapoRub® is an ointment to be applied to the chest, neck, or back, or it can be added to hot water. The medication releases three active ingredients, which are inhaled by the patient to provide relief from cough and muscle discomfort that accompany flu and colds, as well as relief from nasal congestion (blocked nose caused by flu, colds or other factors such as allergic rhinitis).
When applying or inhaling Vicks VapoRub®, the vapors from its essential oils act on the receptors in the upper airways, promoting relief from nasal congestion and cough. The massage performed when applying the medication to the back warms the area, promoting relief from muscle discomfort.
